LinkedIn is a web-based system which allows you to keep in touch with all of your contacts. You will find it on www.linkedin.com.

You might think that if you have something like Microsoft Outlook or store your contact details in Google Mail or any other proprietary system, then it is all taken care of. Think again!

Here are 12 reasons why you should use LinkedIn:

1. It is another way of giving you a web profile, which makes it easier for people to find you.
2. You will find people who you may have lost contact with and they will find you!
3. If one of your contacts changes their job title or contact details, you will be automatically updated by email when they change their profile. You will never again have to check addresses when you do a mailing list.
4. You can use LinkedIn to update your contacts in MS Outlook, so you can get the best of both worlds.
5. You can use LinkedIn to find people in specific organisations – brilliant for a marketing campaign. Even better, LinkedIn will search your network of contacts and tell you how many steps removed you are from your ‘target’ contact.
6. You can locate people who went to the same schools or colleges.
7. You can find people who have worked for the same organisations as you.
8. You can search for and join groups to get into contact with people with similar interests.
9. You can create your own groups to start discussions on subjects you are interested in – personally or professionally.
10. You can post messages on LinkedIn on matters of interest to you or your network of contacts, thus increasing your profile on the web.
11. You can receive the postings of people in your groups or contact base to see what is topical in your areas of interest. This is a great source of information.
12. You can look at the people that your contacts are connected to and expand your personal network of contacts where appropriate.
