15 things a Client can do to ensure the success of their capital projects

Enlightened Clients are fully aware of the impact which they have on the success of their own projects and the benefit which this has for their organisation and all participants on the project.

In order to create the conditions for success, good Project Clients understand that they need to:

  1. Set the tone by approaching the project in a planned way
  2. Take nothing for granted
  3. Allocate time to become fully involved in the project and
  4. Conduct the project in a professional manner
  5. Appoint good advisers
  6. Insist on a high standard of service
  7. Act reasonably
  8. Insist on first class documentation
  9. Be enthusiastic
  10. Keep good records
  11. Make good and timely decisions
  12. Confirm everything in writing (including electronic records)
  13. Keep everybody informed
  14. Thank people and encourage them
  15. Never lose sight of the “big picture”

Framework agreements in the construction industry

Have they hijacked the industry and reduced competition?

From the early 1990s to 2008, there was an intense and sustained boom around the world in the construction industry. For an archetypal boom and bust industry, this has been a real treat. It began to look as though it would never end, even though we knew it must. We had seen recessions in each of the decades from the 60s onwards and it was only the beginning of this century that was the exception. We were 8 years into the decade before this recession struck.

In a conversation with a group of journalists recently, I found that very few of them had ever experienced a recession before. They will now. The next few years will be a big learning curve for them and I believe that a few attitudes will be changed. What works in the boom years simply does not work in the lean years and vice versa.
